I love free stuff - especially free books!

And I love the little "free" libraries that are popping up all around the country. Of course, books are free at your regional county library (with the exception of late or lost fees). But, those library books have to be returned.

Books from the little free libraries have no strings attached. Mystery novels, cook books, picture books for kids, computer programming manuals . . . and enclosures are usually so darn cute! It's exciting to return to these libraries to see what's new - or old (as in beat up, outdated, out of print, or vintage). Some of the little libraries have themes, while others accept a variety of books in the exchange. Some have rules about exchanging, while others leave it up to you to decide how to participate.

My child is intrigued with the concept and wants us to build one. It's a lovely social experiment about community trust. Will people participate? Will anyone contribute? What if the enclosure (library box) starts to fall apart - will an anonymous community member make repairs?

I've come across two in my community. I'm on a little treasure hunt to find more. Nothing like a good book to go with my latte.

Put this on my bucket list:
Build a little free library for our neighborhood.

What's your experience with little free libraries? How would you make one?

    1. Jen - I just added a link to http://littlefreelibrary.org. I bet if you chatted with some of your neighbors, someone will know where there is one in your area. Thanks for stopping by the blog!

  2. We have numerous ones around the Milwaukee area, including one that a friend runs. However lately some people have been going to them in one area and clearing out all the books. They caught one lady who was taking the books for her daycare.

    1. That's a bummer - but in the spirit of the project, all books are free, no strings attached. Maybe that little library should change their genre of books. Thanks for visiting my blog!
